Photo taken at the black bull threshing festival, august 2019 our faces form the core of our identity.  What stories are told in the wonderful faces of our elderly?  We must not forget these faces so that our elderly are not simply statistics to be weighed in the current crisis.

Judge View : superb study of an older man's face. The image displays excellent technical skills, evokes the nature of Identity, and makes a human connection to the subject. Indeed, as the photographer says in their attachment, we should not forget the faces and identity of the elderly in this current crisis.

Highly Commended : Denise Sheridan, Joan Solon, Robert Fairfield

Despite social isolation my boys celebrated by dressing up and displaying their art.

I feel it demonstrates our sense of identity and belonging in the face of hard times - Denise Sheridan

Judge view: Great photo. Captures the fun, celebration and sense of identity of St Patrick's Day, even in lockdown mode

This is my submission for the amateur photography competition. For me it shows or identifies a fisherman enjoying the sport and the pleasure of nature’s bounties. I wish you well in the current crisis. Be safe, be happy. Enjoy the small pleasures in life. - Joan Solon

Judge View : Excellent composition, lighting and exposure. Again we can speculate as to the identity and sense of belonging to nature of the fisherman.

My grandmother nan Kelly gave me this house plant one Christmas. She loved flowers and gardening. Her house was always a warm and welcoming haven. She passed away nearly four years ago just short of her 95th birthday. I love that the plant she gave me has survived and thrived in the house in Mountshannon I now call my home. - Shane Kelly

Judge View : Very good black and white image which explores the idea of a hidden identity, particularly in this era of social media.

Integrity-in the sense of completeness, in toto, down to the ground . The whole, every aspect of the human condition is one of contradiction! A beautiful day, lovely river, charming little petals in the river with a pattern painted by pollution, by gunk-but, we as humans can even find beauty in that scene. Nothing is either or. - Wiltrud Dull

Identity: the fact of being who or what a person or thing is.

I took this photo of a favourite spot where I sit in west Clare. It's by a river at the bottom of a field. I hadn't intended entering it for a competition or at the time wasn't thinking about identity. On receiving your email again reminding entrants about closing date for competition I thought of the meaning of the word identity and this photo came to mind. As a hiker, a lover of nature, a reader and writer and a happy person who loves colour this photo is my identity. Walking stick, red coat, daisy water bottle, bag of books and writing journal - my true identity. - Anne Kenny

Identity is a perception held in any given moment.

From the left, there are three-night lights enclosed in a lantern, (although only two can be seen). There is a solo, round candle next to the lantern. There is a larger, scented candle purposefully presented in a designated jar. Lastly, there is a recycled jar wherein three lights shine. Our soul light comes in many different shapes, sizes and colours. We may come from different homes, communities, countries and even continents. Conditioning may have us believe our identities are made up by gender, monetary wealth, what we work at, what our title is and who we live with. Even if only for a moment, we are shown another possibility. We are all of the one identity. We all share a light, how brightly it shines may vary. Our identity is being altered by our universal experience in this very moment. - Cli Donnelan

Only the ink of the unknown author gives a clue otherwise the paper would stay blank

Mask- in a mundane world so grey in its routine every mask a human can wear seems so colourful and bright. - Marina Mccogan

Owners of the shoes- a way to see who lives in the house by looking at the shoes.

Tracks in the snow - describes how the tracks in the snow helped humanity since the dawn of time to identify who else is on the move, tracking down food. - Marina Mccogan

Taken in Mountshannon in January - this photograph represents my new identity as I moved to Mountshannon in October 2019 after 40 years living in limerick. - Gaye Moore

Our winner

Sarah Treacy

Photo taken at Meelick, whitegate, sunday 17th April.

It relates to the theme of identity because it was taken during a family walk in our land which goes to the shoreline. To me it shows how our identity is shaped by those around us and where we come from. During this covid crisis we appreciate the simple beauties around us and learn who we really are.

Judge View : Lovely composition and exposure contribute to a great image of a lakeside walk. The photographer feels a sense of belonging to the land and its people.

I think this is a good way to describe my identity because every time I look at it, it reminds me of the crisp red leaves of autumn, my favourite season, and ruby my favourite colour. The calla lily flower represents me because I am bright and I learn to grow quickly. The raindrops represent my imperfections. I found it right outside my house beside our front door. - Chantal Zevering

The Reason This Photograph Relates To The Theme Identity Is Because The Blue Part Of The Sky Is Happiness And The White Is Sadness And The Black Brambles Are Pain/sadness And I Think Emotions Really Shape Who People Are. - Ella Natalia Rose Jurascheck Age:12 Years
